Investors have shown increasing interest in environmental, social, and governance issues. It’s no secret that we face many environmental issues today with global warming, uncontrollable wildfires, air and water pollution, and waste disposal. Investors have been searching for ways they can positively impact the environment while making money through investing. ESG investing focuses on publicly traded companies that create solutions for some of the global problems we are battling.
What is ESG
ESG stands for Environmental, Social, Governance. The trend of investing to help save the world is growing rapidly. ESG investing involves researching and factoring in environmental, social, and governance issues, in addition to financials, when evaluating potential stocks to invest in.
Environmental
Environmental discusses the preservation of nature and the earth. A few environmental issues that investors look for companies to address are climate change, recycling and waste disposal, renewable energy use and pollution.
Social
Social refers to the treatment of people and the relationships within a company. Some social issues that investors want companies to handle include company culture, employee treatment and retention, and customer care and service.
Governance
Governance states the proper ethics needed for running a company. The issues included in corporate governance include company transparency, diversity, and executive salary, bonuses, and perks.
Conclusion
Investors want to make money and ensure environmental protection. Investors are focused on including non-financial factors as part of their investment portfolios. ESG investing may contribute to reverse some of the adverse effects caused by major corporations.
